Joseph J. Penna, a former official with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 26, 2106. He was 72 years old.

A Visitation will be held at the LaMonica Memorial Home, 145 East Mount Pleasant Ave., on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm followed by a service at the funeral home on Wed., June 1, at 11 am.

Joe began his IBEW career in 1966 with NJ Bell in Essex County and in 1968 he was elected by his peers to be their Delegate in IBEW Local 827, a statewide NJ Labor Union. It was then that he began preserving and improving worker rights and benefits.

Recognized as a knowledgeable and formidable Union Leader, Joe was appointed the International Representative by the IBEW International President and became the Director of Telecommunications in Washington, DC. After 5 years in this position overseeing Local Unions nationwide, family and health issues brought Joe back to NJ. He was then appointed the International Rep for the Telecommunications Locals in the Third District including Local 827.

Following his retirement and his desire to help the membership, led to his run for the Local's leadership and was elected to the office of Vice President. His 3 year term ended and due to health issues, Joe opted to finally retire in 2013.

Joe had many accomplishments over his 47 years of service and he will long be remembered as a distinguished Union Leader who existed for the well-being of the workers. The membership will miss him. The Brotherhood will miss him. Those who knew him will miss him and the Angels in Heaven have now gained an ally.

He is survived by his three loving children, Melissa Ann Penna, Joseph John Penna, Jr. and his wife Katie, and Anthony Joseph Penna, a brother James Penna, and 4 grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Diabetes Association or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
