Joseph Spero died Friday in Palm Harbor, Florida. He was 96 years old.

Joseph Spero was born on June 27, 1916 in New York, NY, the second of six children. He spent his youth in upstate New York. As a young man, Mr. Spero worked as a stone mason for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) helping to build and improve the state parks and forests in New Jersey.

During World War II, Mr. Spero served in the Navy aboard the USS Earl K. Olsen. After the war, Mr. Spero returned to New Jersey, where he worked for the Erie Lackawanna Railroad, retiring in 1976.

Mr. Spero spent the last 25 years in Florida, first in Hudson and then Clearwater. An avid outdoorsman throughout his life, Mr. Spero was well known for his long daily walks, which he completed regardless of the weather. His friends and neighbors often inquired "how many miles today Joe?" Mr. Spero also enjoyed fishing and bow and arrow hunting. A devout Catholic, Mr. Spero was a member of St. Michael The Archangel Catholic Church.

Mr. Spero's survivors include his two children, daughter-in-law, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. His wife of 61 years, the former Mary Mikolitch, died in 2000.

Funeral services will be held at St. Michaels The Archangel Catholic Church in Clearwater, FL. The burial service will be private.
