Joseph Wellborn Burroughs, 57, passed away on Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at home in Raleigh. A Raleigh native, Joe was born August 3, 1959, the loving son of Herbert "Iggy" Wellborn Burroughs, Jr. and the late Sara Chalmers Burroughs.
Joe graduated from Sanderson High School in 1977. He earned his degree from Vanderbilt University in 1981, where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. He is remembered as an active participant in various Sanderson alumni activities in Raleigh for many years. Joe was a member of his high school and college swimming teams, winning numerous high school and regional titles. He was a member of relay teams that set North Carolina state records. He was an avid fan of tennis and swimming his entire life. He could quickly recall the personal bests and achievements of competitors and the records and times for many events.
Joe had a long career in sales, marketing, and advertising in Charlotte and Raleigh, and served as a Past President of the Charlotte Mecklenburg advertising club. His "Check It Out" campaign for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Public Library won numerous awards and was adopted by many public libraries across the country.
Joe was a lifetime member of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church where he served as an usher, was a member of the Methodist Men and ACC Sunday school class. He was a loving son and brother, a dear friend to many, and will be remembered for his many acts of kindness.
Joe is survived by his father, and his brother Thomas C. Burroughs of Raleigh and Chicago, Illinois; his aunt Alta B. Chalmers, of Raleigh; his cousin J. Timothy Chalmers of Raleigh and his wife Collins; and his cousin Sara French Wike of Smyrna, Georgia and husband Joe.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held 11:00 AM Monday, July 31st at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church, 2209 Fairview Rd. in Raleigh. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall following the service. There will be a private burial at Raleigh's Historic Oakwood Cemetery.
