COLUMBIA - Josephine Stout Lumpkin, known to all as “Bittie,” passed away Sunday, October 22, 2017. Born on July 4, 1921 in Washington, D.C., she was a daughter of the late James M. Stout and Mary Belle Fuller Stout. Although she began her life’s journey in Washington, the early death of her mother brought her to Columbia, South Carolina in the depths of the Great Depression to live with her aunt and uncle, Earl and Josephine Wilson and to meet her best friend, husband of 66 years, and love of her life, Morris Carmichael Lumpkin, who preceded her in death. After being separated by her attendance at Virginia Intermont College and his service in World War II, they were reunited in marriage in 1944. Together, as witnesses to and participants in a large part of our relatively young country’s history, they learned one of life’s greatest lessons and one that can only be learned from experience: how to make the best of any situation and find true happiness. To the delight of both the family and friends, she leaves behind and the ones she now rejoins, they continue this journey together again.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Lee, Lawrence and Julie, and Morris III and Merri Beth; and grandchildren, Morgan, Doug, Luke, Josie, Rosie, Morris IV, Nimmer and Steven.

The family wishes to thank Senior Matters and their great staff for the loving care they gave Bittie for the last 18 months of her journey.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

A private graveside service will be held on Thursday, October 26, 2017 in Elmwood Cemetery and a memorial service will be announced at a later date. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
