Graveside service with full military honors for MSGT (Ret.) Joseph Hillman, Jr., 95, will be Wednesday, January 04, 2016 at 1:00 P.M. (CST) at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens in Rome, Ga with Dr. Lewis Conaway officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 11- 12 (CST) at Thompson Funeral Home. Mr. Hillman passed away Saturday, December 31, 2016 at Jacksonville Health and Rehab Center. Survivors include his sons, Vern B. Hillman (Terry) of Palmer, Alaska and Steven Mark Hillman of Rock Run; four grandchildren, Jennifer Hillman Whatley (Robert), Kimberly Welch (Rudy), Jonathan Hillman (Amber) and Matthew Hillman (Casandra); and eight great grandchildren, Joshua Welch, Noah Welch, Jordyn Welch, Solomon Welch, Sydney Hillman, Caleb Whatley, Zoe Whatley, and Eden Whatley. Pallbearers will be members of the military honor guard. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of the Rock Run Community. Mr. Hillman had been a resident of Rock Run since 1966 where he was a member of Rock Run Baptist Church. He served in the United States Army during WWII and the United States Air Force during the Korean War and the beginning of the Vietnam War. He retired as a Master Sergeant with 20+ years service in the United States Air Force. He was chief of the electric shop at Fort McClellan for 15 years and was the last surviving Gold Star Father in the Piedmont area. He loved building things, helping his neighbors, gardening, and cooking. He was preceded in death by a son 1st Lt. Joseph Hillman III whom was killed in action on July 22, 1968 in Vietnam; a daughter, Joyce Hillman; a granddaughter, Katie Lynn Bradley; daughter in law, Johnnie Lynn Hillman; and wife of 67 years, Mrs. Connie B. Hillman. Flowers may be sent or memorial contributions may be made to Rock Run Baptist Church, 4385 County Road 12, Piedmont, AL 36272.
