Joyce Shaw Glass

Joyce Glass, age 84, passed away on April 7, 2017. Joyce was born in Ly Cygne, KS on November 10, 1932 to Ed and Letha Shaw. She moved to Salinas with her parents in 1942 where she attended local schools and making life long friends that continued to celebrate the "1950's" at a reunion every July.

Her love of sports was a constant throughout her life. It was at a baseball game she met and married Bill Glass while he was playing for the Salinas Colts. Joyce moved to San Juan Bautista and raised six children from kindergarten to college. Her children also become involved in sports at an early age and all went on to play in college. Joyce never missed a little league, high school or college game whenever her family or friends were playing. You could always find Joyce driving the San Juan kids to games, carpooling to Hollister for football practice, in the stands, picking up anyone that needed a ride back to San Juan after school events.

Returning to college in the 1970's Joyce completed her education. She, along with Kathy Zanger, began the Women's Reentry Program for Gavilan College. A pilot program helping women to return to college and earn their degrees. The program received National recognition in Washington, DC and was adopted as a program model for Community Colleges through out the country. Retiring from Gavilan in 1987 Joyce went on to work at FAST Travel taking trips and planning trips for family and friends. Always willing to help any one whenever she could was a constant in her life. Nominated for Santa Clara County Women of the Year, Advisory committee for Governor Deukmejian, CRLA Board Member, PTA President, School Board member, Den mother. You could always find Joyce on a committee that served to better the community.

After retirement, Joyce became a grandmother to eleven grandchild and, she became the back up babysitter, mentor and good friend to her grandchild while they grew up.

Joyce is survived by her children Jack Glass (Jeanne) of Lodi, Jill Pagaran (Fred) of San Juan Bautista, John Glass (Annette) of Elk Grove, Jeffery Glass (Anke) of Lacy WA, Jere Glass of Sonora, and son-in-law Ron Ross of Hollister. Joyce was preceded in death by her daughter Jo-Letha Ross and daughter-in-law Jeanne Glass. Grandchildren: Adam, Christian Glass, Alan, Jeremy Pagaran, Jacob, Jordan Glass, Daniel Glass, Kathryn Nobile, Kevin Ross, Linda Garcia and Elizabeth Thorpe. Great-grandchild: Emmitt Nobile.

Private services will be held. Those wishing to honor Joyce may make donations to the Community Foundation For San Benito County Women's Fund.
