Joyce L. Neale (Johnson)
Joyce Lee was born to Hazel (Owens) and Floyd Johnson on Nov. 12, 1938 in Kansas City, MO. She grew up to go to Northeast High School where she met Fred Neale whom she fell madly in love with and married on Feb. 25, 1956. They had two sons, Stephen Michael (Nov. 22, 1956) and Timothy Mark (Dec. 7, 1958). Sadly, both sons would precede her in death, Steve May 9, 2016 and Tim August 1991. Joyce is survived by her husband as well as four grandchildren: Rhiannon, Sydney, Micah, and Dalton; and eight great-grandchildren: Rhys, Kaleb, Brayden, and Lilly, Wisdom, Knowledge, Rosalie, and Sammy.
Joyce worked for the telephone company and as office clerk for the Neale family printing company, but the career she will be remembered for was that of loving homemaker. In fact, when she worked for her father-in-law at the print shop, she was adamant that she only work while the boys were in school and insisted on being home to greet them off the bus everyday. She took great pride in keeping a home that her family felt safe and loved and cared for in. The grandchildren in turn became the heart of that home. All four of them loved having sleepovers at Grandma and Grandpas, sleeping on the fold out bed and eating Grandma’s yummy brownies! The great-grandkids knew right where she kept the toys and that they probably could do no wrong in her eyes.
This wonderful woman beat breast cancer once, but when it returned, it came on with a fury. Joyce succumbed to the cancer on Feb. 25, 2017, she and Fred’s 61st wedding anniversary. She woke that morning excited to see that day! She will be greatly missed by everyone who ever had the joy of meeting her, and especially her family who will carry her love in their hearts forever.
In lieu of flowers, Joyce asked for donations to any breast cancer research or the Kansas City Fireman’s Fund.
