Juanita Powell, aged 85, died peacefully at her home on August 11, 2017 in Roswell, Georgia. Juanita was born March 9, 1932, in Winter Haven, Florida, the daughter of Josephine and Daniel Coker.

Juanita graduated from Winter Haven High School. After high school, she attended nursing school at Grady Hospital in Atlanta. After graduating, she worked in the operating room at Grady. In 1952, Juanita met the love of her life, Waldo Powell, who was a physician at both Emory University and Grady Hospital. They were married in 1954. They would remain inseparable until his death in 2001. Juanita and Waldo had their first child, Carole, in 1955. Within eleven months of the birth of Carole, they were blessed with twin girls, Susan and Kathy. Their last child was a boy, Ralph, born four years later. Waldo was ecstatic finally having a boy with all those girls! Juanita's career changed from a caregiving nurse to that of a devoted and loving mother and wife. When her children were teenagers, Juanita's house became the "go to" home for all the teens. She always provided food and a welcoming atmosphere to everyone. Many of the girls' friends considered Juanita their second Mom. Juanita never met a stranger, was quick-witted, and always generous. Once the children were grown, Juanita spent her time volunteering at Emory University Hospital, where her husband was a surgeon at the Winship Clinic. She was a member of First Baptist Church Roswell. Juanita thoroughly enjoyed playing bridge, walking and spending time with her family and friends.

Juanita is survived by her daughters, Carole Powell (husband Dwight), of Atlanta, Georgia; Susan Vlass (husband Barry) of Roswell, Georgia; Kathy Robinson (husband Mike) of Greensboro, North Carolina; her son, Ralph Powell (wife Heather) of Sylvester, Georgia; her grandchildren – Jamie Sharpless, Kelly Culbertson (husband Ben), Drew Vlass, Sidney Vlass and Talley Powell; her great grandchildren – Sam, Abby, Daniel Culbertson; and a number of other relatives and close friends.

The family wishes to extend its heartfelt gratitude to all of those who cared for her during her illness.

The visitation will be at 3:00 pm at First Baptist of Roswell, with the funeral service to follow at 4:00 pm, Sunday, August 13, 2017. An interment service will be held at Kimball United Methodist Church, Sylvester, Georgia on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent in her name to Kimball United Methodist Cemetery Fund in c/o Carol Hancock, 4010 Highway 33 South, Doerun, GA 31744.
