COLUMBIA - A funeral service for Julius Wells Hair, 96, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 27, 2017, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church with burial in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 26, 2017 from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.
Mr. Hair passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2017. Born on April 24, 1920 in Columbia, he was a son of the late James Thomas Hair and Lula Annabelle Ballentine Hair.
Mr. Hair was a charter member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and was a volunteer for over 20 years with Meals on Wheels. As a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, his life was treasured by so many. He was affectionately known by those who loved him as Daddy, Papa, Poppie, J.W., “Wheel,” “Moneybags,” “Preacher,” and “Hero.” He made everything he did “an adventure” and always had a special bag of candy for the children.
Mr. Hair was a lifelong, die-hard Gamecock fan, traveling far and wide with Jean to cheer on their beloved Gamecocks. He served in the U.S. Army and received the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star, the Philippine Liberation Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star, and many other decorations and citations. He enjoyed a long and successful career as a factory sales representative for the American Furnace Company (AFCO) and made friends wherever he went.
Surviving are his daughters, Linda Sloan (Mark) of Columbia, Judy Stanton (Minot) of Columbia, and Suzy Meyer (Steve) of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren, Buffy Smith, Jeannie McCormick, Matt Sloan, David Sloan, Kelly Hipsher, Katy Hanna, Caroline Bragg, Zach Meyer, and Wells Meyer; 14 great-grandchildren, Watts, Nate, and Sam McCormick, Maggie, Zoe (Zorie), and Tori Smith, Asher and Lucy Sloan, Emmaline and Anna Sloan, Addie, Harper, and Emmy Collins Hanna, and Banks Hipsher; and brother, Harold D. Hair of Columbia.
He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret Jean Catoe Hair; brothers, Johnnie H. Hair, David Earl Hair, James T. Hair, and Paul Eugene Hair; and sister, Elizabeth Draughon.
