Devoted wife, mother and grandmother

Karen Howerter was born June 26, 1941 in El Reno, Oklahoma to Dr. Vernon V. Sisney and Wilma B. Sisney. She graduated from Northeast high school, and earned her MSW in 1965 at the University of Oklahoma. She then went on to practice social work at the Veterans hospital in OKC, the Baptist Medical Center in OKC, and finally moved into private practice where she conducted therapy for many of the first responders and victims after the Murrah federal building bombing.

She married the love of her life, Denny Howerter, on August 7th, 1965. They remained happily married until her passing on April 17, 2017 at Autumn Leaves of Southwest OKC. Their marriage was blessed with two boys and a lifetime filled with family and joyous memories. Karen was a long-time member of the Lamplighters Sunday school class at Crown Heights Christian Church. She loved arts and crafts and participated in The Affair of the Heart for over 20 years. She was also a Cub Scout den mother, and an active member of the PTA while her children were in school. She traveled much of the United States, visiting family and friends.

Karen is survived by her husband, Denny Howerter; two sons, Marc and Matt Howerter; daughter-in-law, Lane Howerter; two grandchildren, Corbin and Logan Howerter; and her brother, Vernon Sisney and his wife Janice.

Visitation will be Wednesday, April 19th, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Hahn-Cook/Street & Draper in OKC. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 20th, at 2 p.m. at Crown Heights Christian Church in OKC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Crown Heights Christian Church - Youth Endowment Fund, 4020 N Western Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73118.
