Karen Rae Sanno, passed away from complications after a long illness, on Monday, April 10, 2017. She was made comfortable and at peace, surrounded by family and friends at her bedside.
Karen was born in Park Ridge, Illinois on April 22, 1971. She grew up in Niles, Illinois, and later attended The University of Illinois, where she earned a degree in Music Performance. Karen pursued her love of music, playing in orchestras all over the world. She moved to New Orleans in 1997, where she fulfilled her lifelong dream of becoming an orchestra member with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra.
Karen dearly loved the city of New Orleans, and struggled to continue her life as a musician after Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005. With help from musicians and orchestras throughout the United States, The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra survived, and Karen embraced the beauty and culture of the Crescent City as her new home.
Karen is survived by her parents, Charles and Jean (Alajoki) Sanno, her sister, Donna Bradley (Peter), and nephews, Emmett and Ewan Bradley. She was loved by her Aunt, Barbara Alajoki, her cousins, Kristine Alajoki, Jennifer (Alajoki) Okuda (Garrett), and their daughter, Kendall Okuda. Karen’s Great- Aunt Loretta and cousins Linda (Sanno) Coven, Cheryl (Sanno) Lockhart, and Susan Sanno expressed their sadness in her passing.
Karen played with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra for twenty years.
Over the years, Karen served on the board and many committees of the LPO, and had also served two years as president of the orchestra. The Louisiana Philharmonic will dedicate their next scheduled performance to Karen’s memory at the Orpheum Theater in New Orleans. The concert is scheduled for April 20, 2017, at 7:30 P.M.
There will be a memorial for Karen at the Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home in New Orleans on Friday, April 21, 2017, from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. Following at 3:00 P.M. Karen’s ashes will be placed at Tranquil Oaks Cremation Garden.
Should family and friends desire, memorial contributions may be sent to the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra.
