Karin Melitta Spiva, age 68 of Aztec, New Mexico, went to be with her Heavenly father on Thursday, October 19th, 2017 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, after a long courageous battle with scleroderma. Karin was born April 11, 1949 in Schwetzingen, Germany to Herbert and Elfriede Koehler. She and her family immigrated to the United States in 1956 when she was 7 years old. Karin, her sister, Ingeborg, and her brother, Peter mastered the English language quickly. Karin then graduated from Utica High School in Shelby Township, Michigan.
Karin married Larry Mack and they moved to Wyoming where they had two children, Sheila and Travis. After Karin divorced, she met and married Ralph Spiva in 1982. They spent nearly 35 very happy years together. Karin and Ralph settled in Farmington, New Mexico where Karin worked as a realtor. She served a term as San Juan Board of Realtors President and was very proud of her work.
Karin loved to golf and even after her disease caused her to be on oxygen, she would stretch out that oxygen hose, smash the ball and then look over and flash her beautiful smile. She enjoyed playing "words with friends", working crossword puzzles and was an avid reader. Besides soaking up the sun in Phoenix during the winter, Karin looked forward to the summer, running around the country in the motorhome, visiting relatives in New Mexico, Texas, Michigan and Wyoming.
Karin endured a great deal of pain and suffering the last fifteen years of her life, but she handled it with fortitude and grace. She always made the best out of any situation with a smile on her face. Karin was a very special lady and will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her husband, Ralph; mother, Elfie Koehler from Byron Center, MI; daughter, Sheila Gonzales and her husband, Danny from Frisco, TX; son, Travis Mack from Aztec, NM; sister, Ingeborg Citrone from Byron Center, MI; brother, Peter Koehler and his wife, Kathy from Columbus, MI; grandson, Corey Gonzales from Frisco, TX; grandson, Kyle Gonzales from Houston, TX; aunt, Ingeborg Hauck from Germany; along with many cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Herbert Koehler in 2003.
Karin was first a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Now she's our angel in Heaven until we meet again. Please visit www.chapelofthechimesmortuary.com to send condolences.
