Katherine Hare (Maynard) Tucci of Spring Hill passed away on November 30, 2016, at Valley Center at the age of 95.

"Kate" was born to Katherine Hare Mortimer and Grover Cleveland Maynard on September 10, 1921. She died of unknown causes and is preceded in death by her husband of 33 years O.P. "Babe" Tucci, her brothers Grover, Egbert, Herbert and beloved sister Caroline Maynard. Katherine is survived by two daughters, Kathy Tucci Edwards of Huntington, WV, and Martha Tucci of Topeka, KS, and four grandchildren Sally and Alan Edwards and Emily and Lucca Wang.

Kate was a graduate of Rainelle High School, Rainelle WV. She attended West Virginia Tech in Montgomery, WV, and was a graduate from the Medical College of Virginia (now VCU) Richmond, VA, with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and majors in Chemistry and Biological Sciences. She served from 1944 – 1946 as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and the Medical Department of the Red Cross during World War II in Swindon, England where she was awarded two overseas service bars, a Meritorious Unit Award, a European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and a World War II Victory Medal. She worked as a BSN prepared RN at Union Carbide and CAMC. After the death of her husband, in 1983 she owned and operated West Virginia Archery Supply until retiring at the age of 84 to care for her sister. Katherine was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of South Charleston. She was an avid reader, dedicated nurse, savvy business woman, and fiercely independent person.

A small military graveside service to Honor the Life of Katherine Tucci will be held at 1:00 pm Friday December 2, 2016, at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Veterans of Foreign War, the National Wildlife Federation, or the Democratic National Committee.
