Kathleen Mary Frantz, 59, of Ankeny and formerly of Montezuma and Grinnell, passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2017, from this life after a year and half battle with pancreatic cancer.

Mass of the Resurrection will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 18, 2017, at the Community Hope Church in Montezuma with Rev. Ron Hodges, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grinnell, officiating. Pianist will be Marilyn Kriegel. Casket Bearers will be Dan DeRycke, Randy DeRycke, Ryan DeRycke, Mike Goodman, Austin Hester, Luke Goodman, Andy Smith and Steve Smith. Honorary Bearers will be Donovan Smith, Jacob Ladeburg, Gabriel Smith, Taylor Vander Leest, Brooklyn Smith, Dylan Vander Leest, Mason Vander Leest, Evan Neil, Eloise Boughton and Jett Boughton. Interment will be at the Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma.

Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home beginning 1:00 p.m. on Sunday and the family will be present at the funeral home from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. A scripture service will be held 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Should friends desire, memorials in Kathleen's name may be directed to the Pancreatic Cancer Research via Kathleen's Krusaders at the Purple Stride @ Support.pancan.org or sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.

Kathleen was born on June 18, 1958, at the former St. Francis Hospital in Grinnell, Iowa to Marvin and Mary Frances Facile Van Gorp. She was raised in Montezuma and graduated from Montezuma High School with the Class of 1976. She held the record in the long jump for several years at Montezuma High School.

Kathleen was a loving mother to four children and cherished time spent with her children and grandchildren. She also worked at Grinnell Regional Medical Center and for the past few years she was a rehabilitional assistant for the State of Iowa.

On March 14, 2016, she was united in marriage to Gary Dean Frantz at All Saints Catholic Church in Des Moines. The couple made their home in Ankeny and one of the highlights of their marriage was a trip to Cancun in Mexico.

Kathleen enjoyed the outdoors, camping, visiting Lake Ponderosa, hiking and walking and doing yard work. She was also an avid Iowa State Cyclone fan. She fought a battle with pancreatic cancer for almost two years and was active in the Purple Stride of the Pancreatic Cancer Research Association.

Survivors include her husband, Gary Frantz of Ankeny; her children, Steve (Michelle Green) Smith of Cedar Rapids, Jennifer (Joel) Vander Leest of Grinnell, Andy (Tiffany) Smith of West Union, IA and Kelsey (Tyler) Boughton of Montezuma; two step children, Sarah Frantz of Johnston and Luke Frantz of Des Moines; ten grandchildren; her father Marvin Van Gorp of Montezuma; one brother, Wayne Van Gorp of Cedar Rapids; and three sisters, Diane (Allen) Kitzmann of Montezuma, Marveen (Lyle) Behounek of Tama and Marchelle (Mike) Goodman of Montezuma.

She was preceded in death by her mother.
