LaVerne Horner Brown, 90, unexpectedly, but peacefully joined the Lord Tuesday, July 18th, at Springmoor Retirement Community in Raleigh.

She was born on April 5, 1927 to the late Paul Horner and Naomi High Horner in Bailey, NC. She graduated from Bailey High School, and King's Business College in Raleigh. She was married to the love of her life, James E. Brown, also from Bailey, for 66 years. Due to his long coaching career they moved numerous times over the years. They lived in Cary, then Raleigh, where she and James were house parents to 28 little boys, while he coached and taught at The Methodist Home for Children in Raleigh. She was a school secretary for 36 years including Dunn HS, Hand Jr. HS, Columbia, SC and LeRoy Martin Middle School, for over 20 years. She and James also had a small family Christmas tree farm in Laurel Springs, NC and enjoyed selling their trees at the Raleigh Farmers Market for many years. LaVerne loved to garden, along with canning and freezing. She was known for her famous strawberry jam.

She was a longtime member of Edenton Street United Methodist Church where she served in various capacities for many years. She was a volunteer at UNC Rex Healthcare and a member of a group of retirees from Martin, called the Golden Girls. LaVerne will fondly be remembered for her love of family and friends, as well as, her determination to keep on moving.

She is survived by her son, Jim Brown Jr.(Luanne), daughter, Debra Brown Grady (Kelly Finch); grandchildren, Amanda Brown Vick(Brian), Matthew Grady, Jonathan Grady(Brittany); great grandsons, Andrew Vick, Collin Vick; sister, Paula H. Long(Joel), and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Friday, July 28, 2017 at 11:00, with visitation following, at Springmoor Retirement Community Auditorium,1500 Sawmill Rd., Raleigh NC, 27615. Burial will be at 3:00 in the Bailey Town Cemetery, 11379 NC 581, Bailey, NC.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Methodist Home for Children, 1041 Washington Street, Raleigh, NC 27603, Springmoor Endowment Fund, 1500 Sawmill Rd., Raleigh, NC 27615.
