Laura Baker Barclay, age 79, died peacefully in her sleep on April 8, 2017 in her apartment at Frasier Meadows memory care. Laura was born on September 9, 1937 in Columbia, South Carolina, daughter of Thomas Meade Baker and Anne Graves Baker. Laura attended Dreher High School in Columbia, S.C. before attending Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia. She was a member of the National Honor Society at Mary Washington College where she graduated with her Bachelor's degree in English.
Laura married Charles Scott Venable Barclay on October 22, 1960 after which his work brought them west, first to Tucson, Arizona, then to Deer Lodge, Montana, and to Evergreen, Colorado before finally settling in Boulder, Colorado. Laura and Ven fell in love with Boulder and it quickly became their forever home. Laura always had a passion for community service and staying involved and she quickly engaged herself in volunteer work. Laura was on the Boulder guild for Children's Hospital, was a member of the League of Women Voters, and she helped start a non-profit theatre group for children, Young People in the Performing Arts. Laura was a long time member of the First Congregational Church and enjoyed singing in the church choir. Laura taught English to international students with the YES School, and worked at Kohl and Emerald Elementary schools in Broomfield with the Talented and Gifted programs.
Laura and Ven raised three children in Boulder all of whom live in the area. Laura adored walking and hiking the many trails in the nearby foothills with her dog as well as spending time with her four grandchildren. While Laura loved the mountains, she never lost her affinity for the ocean, and usually made an annual trip to Pawley's Island, S.C. spending a week or two there with old childhood friends and family.
Laura is survived by her three children, Dulaney Barclay, Laura Shove, and Anne Barclay; her grandchildren Barclay Shove, Madison Shove, Daniel Barclay and Lydia Barclay. Additionally, her cousins Calvin Tomkins of New York City, Nancy O'Flinn of Birmingham, Alabama, Kathryn Villard, Emily Jones, John Graves and Rose Dennis.
A memorial service, in her honor, is scheduled for April 28th at 11am at the Frasier Meadows Chapel, 350 Ponca Place, Boulder. Donations, in memory of Laura Barclay, can be made to the Alzheimer's Association at, Share memories and condolences at
