Laverne Ragan, educator, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away on Thursday, July 20 in Pacific Grove, CA. She was born in Andale, Kansas to Andy and Ida Ast and was the youngest of four siblings raised on a small farm in the 1930's-1940. After completing college at Marymount, she returned home to Andale and taught at Andale Rural High School, where she met her husband-to-be, Harold. They were married in Elko, NV in 1956, honeymooned at Lake Tahoe, and made their first home in Pacific Grove. They were married for 60 years before Harold passed away in 2016. Laverne taught business classes at Monterey Peninsula College while raising three boys.
Laverne enjoyed activity. In her childhood, she was known for chasing down chickens on her farm "just to see if she could". She loved to tell stories of her feats on the softball field while growing up. Laverne was the fastest runner in her class, including the boys! She was also her class valedictorian.
Laverne was an avid line dancer at Chataqua Hall and took daily walks around their Fisherman's Flats neighborhood for exercise and social connections. She encouraged her sons to be active as well and often took part in their swimming or tennis games. She enjoyed reading and playing bridge as well. She will be missed by her family and her large circle of friends.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Gene and Cliff. Her sister Irene still resides in Andale, KS. Laverne is survived by three sons: Timothy (Katie) of Sacramento, CA; Scott (Cat Dampier), of Monterey; and Mark (MaryAnn Wilkinson) of Pacific Grove. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Kelli (Drew) Brusaschetti of Rocklin, CA; Jack Ragan of Sacramento, CA; Anne Ragan of Sacramento, CA; Erik (Mallory) Ragan of Ashburn, VA; and Gwendolyn Ragan of St. Petersburg, FL.; and one great grandson, Beau Brusaschetti of Rocklin, CA.
A celebration of her life will be held at The Paul Mortuary, 390 Lighthouse Avenue, Pacific Grove, Ca. 93950 on Saturday July 29, 2017 at 2 p.m.. Internment was at Monterey Cemetery. Laverne was committed to helping other people or animals in need.
