Lawrence Burkhardt III was born in Camden, NJ Nov 8, 1932. His parents fondly called him "Burkie" since he, his father and grandfather shared the same name: Larry. Burkie loved his two dogs, Skip, then Joey as a child. As an adult, he treasured his dog, Anna, and happily dog-sat for Maverick, Beth's dog. Burkie's Uncle Bud was a large animal veterinarian, and Burkie would assist him. When making his career choice, Burkie might have become a vet himself, but instead chose the U.S. Navy. Larry graduated from Annapolis in June 1954 and married Barbara that same month. Barbara grew up with Larry in Woodbury, NJ. Larry had his eye on her earlier than she was ready to respond. But, after Larry's Plebe year (1st year) at the Academy, they officially started dating. They enjoyed a honeymoon in Ocean City, NJ; a place they returned to many summers with children, grand and great grand children. Their first move as a couple was to San Diego where their 1st child, Laurie Jean, was born; her name, a combination of Larry and Barbara Jean.

Their 2nd child, Bill, was born in New London in 1958 and 3rd child, Beth, in Bethesda, MD in 1965.

Over Larry's 32 years mostly as Navy officer, he and Barbara were stationed in New London, CT; Kittery, ME; Idaho Falls, ID; Philadelphia, PA; Washington, DC; Charleston, SC; Norfolk, VA; Honolulu, HI, Long Beach, CA; some locations 2 or 3 times. After retiring from Naval Service as a Rear Admiral, Larry and Barbara spent a couple of years at Niagra Mohawk Utility Company in Syracuse, NY before returning to his beloved San Diego.

Larry and Barbara's family is large. Their daughter Laurie married "Chill", and had Chris, Mary, and Jenny. Chris married Michelle, and had Annabelle, Allison and Jonathan. Mary married Jose and had Hannah. Jenny married Jesse and had Isabelle.

Their son Bill married Sandy and they had Betsy and Tim. Betsy wed Dave and they have Isabella.

Their daughter Beth married David and they have Lauren and Chris.

Larry became a Christian in the 70's. His faith that Jesus died for him, taking away his sins and providing him eternal life served him to his last hour. He was ready to meet his Savior and he has.
