Mr. Lewis Dal Smith passed away peacefully on January 15, 2018 in Huntsville Alabama. Dal was born in New Hope, AL on Dec. 17, 1931. After graduating New Hope High School Dal joined the AIr Force and proudly served in the Korean War. He attended both The University of Alabama and Auburn University upon his return from Korea but Auburn was his heart and was where he met Jane his wife of 59 years. Dal was also a 32nd degree Mason and served in that organization many years. Being raised in New Hope Dal became an avid fisherman, hunter, and outdoor person. He loved the water and his family were all raised camping and fishing on Lake Guntersville along with the many lifelong friends Dal and Jane made. Dal joined IBM out of college and received numerous awards and recognition during his 30 year career with them. He was most proud of being a member of the IBM/NASA Instrumentation and Communications Team that was part of Apollo's successful achievement of Man's First Landing on the Moon, July 20, 1969. Returning back to Huntsville from New York State after retiring from IBM he stayed busy taking trips around the country with Jane and their church friends from Twickenham Church of Christ, where Dal was a member. Dal enjoyed entertaining grandkids, and spending as much time as possible at their place at Little Mountain State Park In Guntersville. Whether it be catching Walleye, Pike, and various other fish on the lakes in Canada and upstate New York or Bass and Bream in the lakes around Guntersville he was the happiest with a pole in the water and watching the Atlanta Braves, NASCAR, and the Auburn Tigers! Dal's proudest accomplishment was his family whom he deeply loved and was always there for them no matter what.
