Lewis Hermanson passed away September 17th, 2010 at North Shore Health. He was born May 6, 1926 in Bushnell, South Dakota to Lewis and Marie (Hagen) Hermanson. He attended rural school and Bruce High School in Brookings County. He was confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church. He enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and participated in Pacific Theater invasions including Pelelui, Leyte in the Philippines, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. During Operation Crossroads he witnessed the detonation of two atomic bombs at Bikini Atoll. Lew was honorably discharged in 1947 and farmed with his brother Edwin until 1948. He moved to Rapid City to work at Hermanson's Food Market, owned by brothers Melvin and Oscar. He met Ardelle Tellinghuisen and they married November 17, 1949. He started selling cars in 1953. Their four sons were born in Rapid City. The family moved to Colorado in 1971. Lew found employment at Nick Davidson Inc in Loveland which happily continued for 33 years. Nick Davidson and Joe Gebhardt were not only his employers, they were his close friends. He sold nearly 8000 vehicles there and won numerous awards and trips for outstanding sales. He enjoyed representing his employers at General Motors car showings throughout the United States. Customers and staff relished the popcorn he made every weekend for over two decades. He gained great satisfaction in his career of 52 years until his health forced him to retire in 2005. He enjoyed daily coffee with his friends, Western movies, music, baseball, boxing and playing cards. He lived for yearly trips to Eastern South Dakota for pheasant hunting. He loved children and always had candy and gum to put smiles on their faces. He treasured visits from granddaughter Erica who always said goodbye with 10 kisses. His last joy was being able to hold his new granddaughter Vesper. Lewis is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ardelle, sons, Bryce of Littleton, Bryan of Loveland, Vance (Ellen and Erica) of Fort Collins, Loren (Kaitlynn and Vesper) of Loveland, brother Melvin of Rapid City, SD, sisters, Myrtle Odegaard of Omaha, NE, and Marion Haugen (Warren) of Seattle, WA, and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Edwin, Ole, and Oscar, and sisters Margaret, Olive, and Othelia. A Memorial Service will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 11, 2010 at Resthaven Funeral Home with a reception to follow at 11:00 a.m. Inurnment with Military Honors will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, at Loveland Burial Park.
