Lillian "Lil" King-Backus, 98, of Fort Wayne, died on October 18, 2017. Born January 2, 1919 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Myrtle (Pappert) Pion. She graduated from St. Augustine's Academy. Lillian lived through what is known as "The Greatest Generation" The various stories she told were always interesting and entertaining. She was a member of the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Orchard Ridge Country Club, and the Pine Valley Country Club. She was an avid golfer and bowler, and excellent hostess who also enjoyed playing cards and socializing with her many friends. Surviving family include her son, Stephen M. King of Fort Wayne, Indiana; daughter, Judith L. (George) (King) Raub of Lafayette, Indiana; grandchildren, Deborah (Dodd) (King) Kattman, Jeffrey M. King, Tina M. King, all of Fort Wayne, Todd C. (Jennifer) Nagel of Manitou Springs, Colorado, and Carissa N. Nagel, Lafayette, Indiana; nine great grandchildren; stepson, Scott Backus, Toledo, Ohio; two stepdaughters, Barbara Smith of Mesa, Arizona and Carol Gibbons of Knoxville, Tennessee; and three step granddaughters, Kelly (Raub) Graham, and Shannon (Raub) Andrews of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Erin (Raub) Young, San Antonio, Texas. Her first marriage was to Walter "Skip" King, Jr. who died in 1978; she was also preceded in death by her second husband, William "Bill" G. Backus, in 1999, and her two brothers, Robert and Richard Pion. A Celebration of Life for Lillian will be from 2-4 pm on Sunday, November 12, 2017 at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 6750 Covington Rd., Fort Wayne. The family deeply appreciates the loving care she received from Saint Anne's skilled nursing and the Hospice staff. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be to the Franciscan Center, Inc., 4643 Gaywood Drive, Fort Wayne, or St. Mary's Soup Kitchen, 1101 South Lafayette St. Fort Wayne.
