COLUMBIA - Mrs. Lillian Gayle Douglas, daughter of the late Charles Norwood Gayle, Sr., and Lillian Hughes Gayle, passed away July 24, 2017, in her home. A lifelong resident of Columbia, she was member of the first graduating class of Dreher High School (1939). She graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1945 with a major in French and a minor in English. She was a member of Delta Zeta sorority, and was recently presented the Order of the Diamond of the Beta Delta Chapter honoring her seventy-five years of membership.

Lil taught French at A. C. Flora High School. She was a member of the Lilac Garden Club, and she delivered Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed The Bridge Club, which started in 1941 and continued until 2010. A member of Shandon Presbyterian Church, she was active in Presbyterian Women and served on the personnel committee.

In 1943, Lil married Joseph William (Billy) Douglas, Sr. After his return from WWII, Lil and Billy moved to Monroe Street where they enjoyed generations of friends in the Shandon community. They could be found nearly every afternoon sitting on their front porch and greeting their neighbors. In her later years, Lil had two goals: to stay independent in her home and to celebrate reaching the age of 95. She accomplished both.

Lil is survived by a daughter, Gayle Douglas Johnson (Evans) and sons, Charles McClellan Douglas and Joseph William Douglas, Jr. (Laurie). She was lovingly known as “Mom Douglas” to grandchildren, Emily Anna Donovan (David), Elizabeth McClellan Jenkinson (Victor), Charles McClellan Douglas, Jr., Patrick Alderman Douglas, Joseph William Douglas, III, Franklin Turner Douglas (Elaine), Benjamin Pierce Douglas (Bianca), and great-grandchildren Elizabeth Lillian Sinclair Jenkinson, Christopher William Sykes, Victor Paul Jenkinson, Jr., Emily Wade Douglas, Phoebe Boyd Jenkinson, and Benjamin Pierce Douglas, Jr. Her loving Johnson-Trantham-Brown-Barron step-grandchildren and their families, her sister-in-law Bess Stuckey Gayle, her nieces and nephews, extended family and many friends also survive her.

Lil was predeceased by her husband of sixty-nine years, Joseph William (Billy) Douglas, Sr., her brother Charles Norwood Gayle, Jr., and her grandson James Richard (Jim) Sykes, Jr.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 27, 2017, at Shandon Presbyterian Church, 607 Woodrow Street, Columbia, SC. The family will receive guests immediately after the service in Davis Hall.
