Lorene “Joy” Edgell, 89, of Cross Lanes ended her suffering on Saturday July 15th, 2017, a bright summers’ morning. She will no longer have to say “thank you for being nice to me” in her timid little voice.

Joy was the daughter of Earl Clinton and Dolly May Parsons Cobb. She was originally from Jackson County, and then to moved to Charleston, and the surrounding area. Joy was one of four girls, and six boys, was said to be the prettiest of the girls (sorry sisters), Joy was preceded in death by her handsome redheaded husband, Coda Ray, and her son Coda Ray Edgell Junior “Bud” who died on June 20th 2017. Also preceding her in death was her sister, Vera “June” Davis; brothers, Robert and Richard Cobb; special brother-in-law and niece, Ronald Barnes and Patsy Louise Robinson and sister-law Marceline Cobb.

Surviving are brothers and sisters: Betty Jewel Barnes of GA, Raymon Cobb of Chas., Ralph Cobb and wife Susie of Chas., Ransford (Joe) Cobb amd wife Louise of Chas., Ruffner Cobb and wife Resa of Martinsburg, WV, Rebecca Myers and husband Rick of Virginia Beach, VA.

Joy loved her church, originally the Tyler Heights Church of the Nazarene, now the First Church of the Nazarene of Cross Lanes. She had been a member since she was twelve years old, she loved teaching, and along the way she was a Sunday school teacher, missionary teacher, and president of the missionary Society. Her lessons always included more than just what was in the teachers plan as she researched her subject, making for an enjoyable and knowledgeable lesson. She organized many vacation bible school Easter egg hunts, and many more activities with so many siblings.

Joy was a second mom to many of her brothers and sisters, then came one of the biggest heart aches in her life, she had to quit school to go to work to help support her family, as it was also each siblings turn as they joined the Armed Forces. Only the youngest did not have to perform this task, she worked for Kanawha County Schools for several years finally retiring from Andrew Jackson junior high. She was known as the singing cook, as she sang while she worked. One year Kanawha County Schools offered an increase in pay to any employee who took the test for a GED, and Joy, and her friends took the test and she passed with flying colors. She was so proud, mom married Cody in 1946 after World War II and he was released from active duty. As each child in Mom's family was responsible for charge credit card debt for the whole family her parents asked who would pay the debt. My father spoke up, and said “I will”, true to his work it was paid off and my parents started their married life. Joy/mom is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Nancy Edgell Withrow Lloyd, and her husband, Anthony Lloyd; grandchildren, Victoria Lynn Withrow-Webb, and Andrea Lynn Kearns, Jonathan Travis, and Cody Edgell; great-grandchildren, Caitlynn Marie, and her partner, Josh Lewis, Starlet Delight, Ethan Roger Kearns, Savannah and Cadence Edgell, and Kayla Garnes; and last but definitely not least great-grandchild Bentlee Ray Lewis.
