Berlin, MD: Louis “Coach” Bender, Jr., 78, of Berlin, MD passed away on September 14, 2016. Lou was born on February 6, 1938 to the late Louis and Charlotte Bender. He was born and raised in Chichester, PA and graduated from Chichester High School. He then later attended and graduated from West Chester State University earning his master’s degree. Lou was always proud of his education and encouraged countless others to pursue their education. After graduation, Lou started teaching and coaching in Delaware. Although he coached many sports, basketball was his passion. As a head coach for over 35 years, he achieved an incredible amount of success. In 2008, Lou was inducted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame as the winningest prep basketball coach in Delaware history. His lifetime record of 509 wins, 211 losses (70.7%) made him the all-time Delaware leader in wins and winning percentage. Lou was also inducted into the Delaware Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009. Just as important as wins and losses, Lou was proud of the hundreds of students he mentored over the years, many going on to become coaches of their own. Lou was more than a coach to many of his players as is evidenced by the outpouring of support since the announcement of his passing. Lou never believed in “me”, he believed in “we”. His favorite saying was “failure to prepare is preparing to fail”. Lou retired in 2006 and moved to berlin, where he played lots of golf, and made many new friends. If you knew Lou for a couple of weeks, or a lifetime, he impacted your life in some way. To many of us, he is a legend, one we will never forget.
