Lucillia Bezerra Boyd
June 25, 1920 ~ March 5, 2017

Celebrating the life of Lucillia B. Boyd who was born in Guadalupe, California to Manuel S. and Marie (Avila) Bezerra. She passed away in Maggie Valley, North Carolina. In 1942, Lu graduated from Holy Names College in Oakland, California and then taught in the Oakland City School System. She married USN CWO Frank C. Boyd of Waynesville in 1944.

Lu was an early child radio pioneer working and performing on many of her family's radio programs on the Latin American Broadcasting Co. (including the Castles of Romance programs) in the 20's and 30's. She was very active with programs concerning the California Azorean (Portuguese) community throughout her whole life. She held various positions with Cabrillo Civic Club, including many years on the scholarship Committee. She was also a member of UPEC, UPPEC, SPRSI, FDES of Monterey, CA and Our Lady of Fatima Society.

Before moving to North Carolina two years ago, she lived over 60 years in Monterey and attended St. Angela Merici Church in Pacific Grove, California. During her time in North Carolina, she enjoyed attending St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church and eating out at Joey's Pancake House in Maggie Valley. Also, she was able to visit with many of her late husband's family again.

She is survived by her son, Paul T. Boyd; daughter, Teresa A. (Ron) Smith; grandchildren, Chrissy (Jason) Doolen; Zach (Cassie) Smith; Seadar (Aaron) Davis; great-grandchildren, Violet Doolen and Colin Herndon; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is preceded in death by her husband, Frank; son, Frank C. Boyd, Jr. (Linny); sister, Lenore LePeilbet Dutra and her parents.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on March 10, 2017 at St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church. Visitation will take place on Thursday, March 23 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon with a Rosary beginning at noon, both at The Paul Mortuary Chapel in Pacific Grove. Burial will follow at El Carmelo Cemetery in Pacific Grove. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Fatima Society, PO Box 51924, Pacific Grove, 93950.
