Lynn E. Shafer, much loved father, grandfather, artist, and entrepreneur, passed away November 4, 2017, due to complications following a fall. Lynn was born in Sego, Utah, to John L. and Nellie M. Shafer. He grew up in Moab and loved Utah's red rock desert country. Lynn served his country in the US Army, fighting in the Pacific Theatre of World War II. Upon returning home, he met Shirley Tuft in Salt Lake City. They married in January of 1948, their loving union lasting almost 70 years.
Lynn's career was based on both his art talent and his business sense. First honing his skills drawing ads and designs for the Salt Lake Hardware Company and the Salt Lake Stamp Company, he later started his own business, Shafer Advertising and Printed Products, after teaching himself silk-screen printing. Besides commercial art, Lynn produced fine art, painting in oils, acrylics, and watercolors, as well as woodcarving. Utah's natural wonders were his favorite subjects.
Lynn loved the outdoors. He took his family camping, hiking, dirt-biking, boating, and skiing. He knew the names of most native plants and enjoyed birds and wildlife. He and Shirley also traveled extensively in the US, Europe, and the Caribbean.
A member of the LDS church, Lynn was a dedicated home teacher for over three decades.
Lynn had an easy manner and a good sense of humor; he made friends everywhere he went and loved talking to people. He will be sorely missed by many. He is survived by his adored wife Shirley, son Brent (Lisa), daughter Lisa, and grandchildren Andrew Shafer (Amanda), Ashley Shafer-Shumard (Thom), and Evan Shafer.
A visitation with the family will be held at Wasatch Lawn, 3401 South Highland Drive, SLC, on November 10th, from 6:00-8:00 PM. A celebration of life will be held at the same location, Wasatch Lawn on November 11 at 2:00 PM.
