Mabel Mears "Charlie" Bugg, 87, passed away July 23, 2017. She was born in Ponte Vedra, FL on September 3, 1929 to Mabel Kinney Mears and George S. Mears. She graduated from Stephens College in Missouri and the University of Kentucky in Lexington, and went on to obtain her Master's Degree in Christian Education from the Philadelphia Divinity School. Upon completing her education, she moved to Durham, NC and worked as a medical secretary at Duke University where she met her future husband, Charles Bugg. Charles practiced pediatric medicine for many years in Raleigh following their marriage and relocation in 1954.

Charlie was active in the Junior League of Raleigh and was a longtime member of Christ Episcopal Church. She helped to found the Museum of History Associates which established programs to further fund and expand the NC Museum of History. Additionally, she was a member of the board of directors of the Duke Marine Lab of which she was an ardent supporter.

Charlie engaged in many hobbies including needlepoint, reading, cooking and devotedly following Duke University athletics endeavors.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Christopher Bugg.

Charlie is survived by her daughters, Virginia Chandler and husband, Jim, and Christina Coughlin and husband, Dan, and their children, Kelly, Jason, and Kevin Coughlin, all of Raleigh.

The family will receive friends from 3-5pm on Wednesday, July 26, at the Clubhouse at The Cypress, 8801 Cypress Lakes Drive, Raleigh. Funeral service will be held 1pm Thursday, July 27, at Christ Episcopal Church, 120 E. Edenton Street, Raleigh. Burial will follow at Historic Oakwood Cemetery, 701 Oakwood Avenue, Raleigh.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Mabel to the American Red Cross, 100 N. Peartree Lane, Raleigh, NC 27610.
