Born September 21, 1917, on Wakefield Farm in Horry County, South Carolina, Mamie Estelle Alford Owens was the daughter of Joseph Whiteford and Lucy Armenta Watts Alford. She was married to Taylor Grant (T.G.) Owens and is survived by their three children: Taylor Grant Owens, Jr. and wife Catherine of Greensboro, Karen Owens King of Clemmons, and Danny Alford Owens and wife Janet of Greensboro; granddaughters Angela King Carter and husband Jeremy of Lenoir, Jennifer Leigh "Salem" Owens of Greensboro, and Sara Danielle Owens of Greensboro; great-grandchildren Rachel Danielle Carter and Ryan Jeremy Carter; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mamie was preceded in death by all of her 12 siblings and their spouses: Lewis (Catherine) Alford; Morris (Katherine) Alford; Parker (Lila Maude) Alford; Allen Alford; Gilbert (Vera) Alford; Urlane Alford; Pennie (Morris) Brown; Arthur Alford; Lloyd Alford; Prudence (Fred) Eassy; Lucy V. (Henry B.) Brown; and Harrison (Grace) Alford.
Mamie loved life, was faithful to her church (Glenwood United Methodist), was proud of her family, and enjoyed many friends. She served her church in many functions, worked as a secretary for Nationwide Insurance agents and a number of years with Steed Insurance Agency, volunteered at Wesley Long Community Hospital and at Friends Homes - Guilford. She loved to travel and she and T.G. visited many foreign countries and traveled in all 50 states.
Funeral services are scheduled for Sunday, September 6, 2015, 2 P.M. Friday, at Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory Street Chapel, 1900 Vanstory Street, Greensboro, Rev. Jean Nall, officiating. Visitation will be at the same location on Saturday evening from 7-8:30 P.M. and on Sunday from 1-1:45 P.M.
Burial will be in the Praying Hands section of Guilford Memorial Park.
