Manuel Isidoro Alves with his family at his side left us to be with the Lord June 8, 2017 due to complications from renal failure. Manuel was born March 27, 1945 in Sao Roque do Pico, Azores, Portugal to Rosa Brum and Manuel Isidoro Alves. His childhood was difficult in that he began to work and had to help the family at a very young age. Manuel would have to rise before dawn and tend to the cows and other animals before heading off to school. Then right after school he would have to return to tend to the animals until dusk. His early days were full, work and school. In his early years as a young man he attended the seminary school on the island of Sao Miguel, Azores. He studied there for two years to become a priest. The priesthood was not what he wanted to do. Manuel married and left for the United States. He came to San Diego, CA in 1968. He began work at Denny’s in Point Loma. In 1969, his first child, Ana Isabel was born. Then in 1970, Paul George, his first son was born. Manuel divorced, and then in 1973 meets Josefina (Josie). They meet through work at the Royal Inn at the Wharf. In 1974, Manuel and Josie were married. Manuel was hired as a painter for the shipbuilder, NASSCO in 1975. They bought their first house in Chula Vista, CA in 1978. In 1984 Manuel and Josie were blessed with the birth of Manuel (Manny) Isidoro, Jr. The family, Manuel, Josie, Frank (Josie’s son) and Manny, then moved to Mira Mesa in 1989 with the purchase of their second home. 1995, Manuel had a kidney transplant, the donor was Josie. Without this match we would not have had Manuel as long as we did. After 32 years Manuel retired from the NASSCO in 2007. Tragically, in 2012 Manny was killed in a motorcycle accident, this had a profound effect on Manuel. One in which started a deterioration of his own health. Manuel was a loving, kind and hardworking man, who was and continues to be loved and missed very much by his friends, family and loved ones. Manuel is survived by his wife Josie Alves; stepson Frank Pizarro; daughter Ana Coelho; son Paul Alves; 5 grandchildren, sister Magdalena Alvoeiro; niece Delfina Alvoeiro and numerous aunts and cousins on Pico, Azores, Canada and in Northern California. Manuel and Manny eternally with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
