ACUSHNET - Manuel "Charlie" Souza, 83, passed away Thursday, December 7, 2017 after a long battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Shirley (Gagne) Souza for 62 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his four children, Mary Martins and her husband Luis of Acushnet; Caroline DaCosta and her husband Jose of Acushnet; Charles Souza and his wife Nestine of Leesburg, VA, and Ramona Melo and her husband Altino of Acushnet. He was the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild. Manuel was the brother, of his sole surviving sister, Dorothy "Suzie" DaSilva of TX, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his grandson Jose DaCosta, Jr., nine siblings and his parents Alfred and Caroline (Pereira) Souza.

Born in New Bedford, he was a lifelong area resident and served in the United States Army. He worked as a caterer for many years and later owned and operated Charlie's Catering alongside his brother and partner, Joseph. The two men provided food and drinks for many workers in and outside the mills and factories of New Bedford.

After his retirement, Charlie enjoyed going to Foxwoods, cruises with his family, sitting on the swing by his pool and simply watching the birds. Charlie was a kind and gentle man, with a love for all animals, particularly his special feline friend, Mittens. His family will always remember their absolutely amazing Dad and how hard he worked to provide for them.

The family would like to sincerely thank the doctors and staff at both Dana Farber and Brigham & Women's Hospital, for their dedication in providing the best care to Charlie and his family.

His visitation will be Tuesday 5-8 pm in WARING-SULLIVAN HOME at FAIRLAWN, 180 Washington St., Fairhaven. All other services are private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, PO Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284-9168 or www.dana-farber.org.
