MARCELO LARA



June 6, 1936 – February 22, 2017



Marcelo Lara, age 80, of Athens, AL formerly of Huntsville, AL passed away at his home on February 22, 2017 after a long illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elizardo Lara and Amelia Mascuñana Lara.



Mr. Lara was born in New York City and moved to Tampa, FL when he was a teenager. After graduating from Jesuit High School in Tampa, he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Florida. Go Gators! Upon graduation, he entered the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant and was assigned to the Officers Ordnance School in Aberdeen, MD. After completion of the ordnance course, he was assigned to Redstone Arsenal, AL. There, he attended the Officers Missile course and was assigned to the Hawk Missile System in the U.S. Army Missile Command. After completing his service requirements, he joined the Civil Service. Mr. Lara retired in 1988 from the Civil Service as the Deputy Director of the Security Assistance Management Directorate, U.S. Army Missile Command. He worked the next 12 years for several area technical services contractors as a program manager.



Survivors include his beloved wife of 57 years, Gardenia C. Lara; two daughters, Yvette M. Lara, Claudine (Troy) Evans; six grandchildren, Clay (Rima) Pence, Jessica Pence, Jonathan Pence, Joshua Evans, Richard Evans and Christine Evans; and numerous cousins. Marcelo was loved by all his family and many friends.

Visitation will be from 1pm to 3pm at Valhalla Funeral Home on Sunday, February 26, 2017. Services will immediately follow at 3pm and interment will be in Valhalla Memory Gardens. Please sign his guest registry at www.valhallafunerals.com.
