Margaret Ashley Kennon Colmenares passed from this life with friends at her side on Tuesday, January 31, 2017, following the effects of a recent heart attack. She will be most sorrowfully missed for her dry wit and frank perspective on life. Margaret was born on July 31, 1925, at Charlottesville, Albemarle County, Virginia, as the eldest of two daughters to Mr. and Mrs. Ashby R. Kennon (Mildred Burgess Kennon).

Margaret grew up at the end of Locust Avenue. She became an accomplished equestrian in her youth and enjoyed many hours of riding and jumping her horses over neighbors’ fences. She also delighted in the many formal socials of Albemarle County. The meadows and forests of Charlottesville were home, yet Margaret came to love the desert Southwest’s vistas and stark beauty as a resident of Tucson, Arizona. She later relocated to Houston, Texas, where a passion for gardening began. Her logical, practical approach and extraordinary attention to detail led her to a 22-year career as a research biologist at the Dental Science Institute, The University of Texas Dental Branch. In 1984, Margaret retired and moved home to Virginia with her second husband.

Margaret began her formal education at St. Anne’s School, Charlottesville, Virginia, and continued at University of Virginia, B.S. Education, 1946. Margaret was inducted into the Emerald Circle of Kappa Delta Sorority, and was a member of the Thomas Jefferson Society of Alumni of UVA. She thoroughly enjoyed meeting with her friends as a member of the Shadwell Chapter of The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Margaret was a long-time member of the Farmington Hunt Club, and was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Albemarle Chapter #154, and enrolled as a member of the National Society Magna Charta Dames.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Dr. John S. Tennant, her sister Martha Lee Kennon Voshell, and brother-in-law, Allen F. “Buddy” Voshell, Jr. Margaret is survived by her loving husband of over 40 years, Emil R. Colmenares, who at 99 remains to meet her again. She is also survived by her seven step-children, Emil Roy Colmenares and wife Kay, Carl R. Colmenares and wife Linda, Robert F. Colmenares and wife Debra, Gloria Colmenares Skobel and husband John, Velinda Colmenares, Carlton Colmenares and wife Catalina, and, Clinton Colmenares and wife Patricia, and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

The family welcomed friends to a graveside service on Saturday, February 4, 2017, at 1 p.m. at Riverview Cemetery. A service near her home in Lake Monticello for friends and family of our dear Margaret will be announced soon.

Margaret’s wishes were to have any condolences be made as donations to honor her memory to the Fluvanna County SPCA, Caring for Creatures, or your favorite charity.
