Margaret Jean Grunwald was born January 16, 1926 in Rector, Arkansas. She died February 24, 2017 in Huntsville, Alabama.

Margaret was married 69 years to Wilbur Eugene (Bill) Grunwald. They married on July 11, 1947 at First Baptist Church in Royal Oak, Michigan. They met when they were just 11 years old, and began dating when they were 15.

After high school, she first went to Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. After marrying, she then attended Hunter College in New York City, and finished her degree in Education from Wayne University in Detroit, Michigan. She was a life-long teacher who began her career teaching Social Studies at Royal Oak High School in Royal Oak, Michigan. She took a break from teaching to raise her family when they moved to Huntsville in 1960. In 1971 she resumed teaching, starting at Cavalry Hills Elementary and ending her teaching career at Mt. Gap Middle School, retiring in 1987.

She had been an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Huntsville for the past 57 years, and a member of the Asbury Sunday School Class (with the exception of a three year period when she and her family lived in the Netherlands). She was actively involved with United Methodist Women for over 69 years, and was a charter member of the DuMidi Women’s Club.

Margaret is survived by her husband, Bill Grunwald; son, Mark Andrew Grunwald and wife, Susan Hale Grunwald, all of Huntsville, AL; daughter, Nancy Jean Estes and husband, Ralph Raymond Estes Jr., of Geneva, NY; brother, George Evan Barker and wife, Pam Barker, of New York City, NY; granddaughters, Megan Swann Grunwald, of Birmingham, AL, Kristin Jean Grunwald, of Auburn, AL; and grandson, Mark David Estes, of Geneva, NY.

Visitation will be at Trinity United Methodist Church – 607 Airport Road SW, Huntsville, AL 35802 Thursday, Mar. 2, 2017 at 12:00 (noon), with the Memorial Service at 1:00 p.m. Associate Pastor Mac Buttram officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Margaret’s memory to the Trinity United Methodist Women.
