Margaret Nell Smith Preble Johnston died of natural causes on November 24, 2017 at UMC, New Orleans. She was 95. A native of Valdosta, Georgia, she lived in New Orleans and Harahan for most of her life. She was a graduate of Tulane University and a member of Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society. For a number of years, she served on the administrative staff of Isidore Newman School. She was a member of St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church and an ordained elder. In addition to having an active role in local church endeavors, she held positions in regional and national levels in global mission work, a service which brought her honors from the Presbytery of South Louisiana and the Presbytery of Matanzas, Cuba. For the past several years, she served as the President of the Presbyterian Foundation of Louisiana. Survivors include a son, Michael Andrew Preble (Anne Guthrie), Hot Springs, AR; two grandchildren, Paul Andrew Hogan (Louise) and Margaret Louise Hogan; three great-grandchildren, Conrad Skinner, Lillian Skinner and Paul Andrew Hogan, Jr.; and a stepson, Robert M. Johnston (Barbara). A special blessing is extended to the doctors and staff of the UMC Trauma Center for their care and grace. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, November 28 at 2:30 pm, at St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church, 1545 State Street, New Orleans. Visitation will begin at 1:30 pm in Fellowship Hall. Interment will be private. Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of the usual remembrances, contributions to the Visionary Fund, St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church, or the Presbyterian Pan American School, P.O. Box 1578, Kingsville, TX 78364, are preferred.
