Marguerite E. Colby ORANGE- Marguerite E. (Cutter) Colby, 82, formerly of Holtshire Road, died Friday evening, June 4, 2010 at Quabbin Valley Healthcare in Athol, following an illness. Born on April 15, 1928 in Ashuelot, New Hampshire, she was a daughter of Vernon and Flora (Ward) Cutter and grew up in Orange, graduating from Orange High School in 1945. As a child, her family traveled throughout the former four towns of the Quabbin Reservoir to operate lumber operations. Marguerite had gone to cosmetology school and had worked at the former Wood's Beauty Salon in Orange, as well as the former Algee's Beauty Shop. She also had done bookkeeping for Plotkin Furniture. She married Francis J. Colby in 1945 and enjoyed 47 years together at the time of his death on November 6, 1992. An Avon representative for a few years, Marguerite later became a manager and then District Manager for Avon products. During her career with Avon, she won several trips including one to Bermuda and one to Hawaii. Marguerite retired in 1988. Marguerite enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She also loved gardening, traveling, Lake Mattawa in Orange, and had been a member of the Emblem Club. Survivors include her son, John Colby and his wife, Stephanie, of Athol; a daughter, Cheryl Kelleher and her husband, Shaun, of Orange; and grandsons, Dr. Matthew Colby of Phoenix, AZ and Ross Colby of Athol; a half brother, Ralph Cutter of Athol; and half sisters, Verna Schoen of Louisiana and Rose-Marie Longan of California. Besides her husband, Marguerite was predeceased by a sister, Doris Dirth and a brother, Thomas Cutter. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, June 8, 2010 from 5-7 p.m. at Witty's Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at 10 a.m. at Witty's Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange. Interment will be in Gethsemane Cemetery, Athol. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to United Way of Athol Area, or the Athol Area YMCA , both at 545 Main Street, Athol, MA 01331 Witty's Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange, is directing the arrangements.
