Marie Alma Stewart Baker, 99, died Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at The Residency, Scottsbluff, NE. She was born September 10, 1917, to Adelbert Lawrence Stewart and Carrie Belle (Curtis) Stewart in Marengo IL. She grew up on a farm and graduated as salutatorian from Marengo High School. She attended Blackburn (IL) College for two years and graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Home Economics.
In 1939 she married Paul C. Baker in St. Louis, MO. They were married for 74 years. They lived in Marengo until 1944, then moved to Port Neches TX where Paul worked for BF Goodrich Chemical Company. Marie was a homemaker and active in school and church organizations. In the 1960s, she taught special needs students at the Angie Nall School in Beaumont TX. In 1976, Paul accepted a transfer to Kaohsiung, Taiwan. While living there, Marie taught in the English Language School. Their next move was to Tampico, Mexico. After Paul retired, they returned to Texas and enjoyed several years of travel throughout the world.
In 2012, Paul and Marie moved to Scottsbluff NE to be near their daughter and family. She is survived by daughter Carol (Bill) Enderle, Scottsbluff; son Franklin Baker (Carolyn Norris-Baker), Jackson NH; daughter-in-law Gloria Baker, Sanibel FL, daughter of the heart Mutusko (Victor) Ujimoto, Guelph ON; granddaughters Sherry Preston, Gering NE; Robin (Rufus) Carter, Kennesaw GA; Via Baker (Elizabeth Schaefer) Romeoville IL; grandsons John Preston (Glenda Banta) Sealy TX; Joel (Amy) Aelwyn, Wheat Ridge CO; great-grandchildren, Lydia, Sarah, Thomas and Zachary Connot, Gering, NE and sister-in-law, Mary Stewart, Cincinnati OH.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, son, Lee Edward Baker, brother, Arthur C. Stewart, sister, Marcia Bramlet and her parents. Funeral service will be 10 am Thursday, April 13, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church, Marengo, IL followed by burial in Marengo City Cemetery.
