Marie Hall Jones Pepper, 92, died on June 3, 2017 at her home on Wares Ferry Road. She was born July 19, 1924 in Montgomery, Alabama to Lillie Bell Brown and Hardie Benjamin Hall. She was one of four Hall sisters, a succession of beauties that included Loisa Myrtlene Hall, Eula Lurene Hall Johnson, and Lillie Mae Hall Miller, all of whom preceded her in death. In 1942, she and Fred Winton Jones were the first couple to be married at Dalraida Baptist Church. After Jones' service in the US Army Air Corps in World War II, they settled in Montgomery where she and he owned and managed the Azalea Termite and Pest Control Company. They raised their three children in that house on Wares Ferry Road. Widowed young, she remarried in 1973 to Loye Thompson Pepper, a surveyor for the Alabama Department of Transportation. They enjoyed a generous life together-most of it spent at their house on Lake Jordan-until his death in 2008.
Marie was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Pilot Club, and the Alabama Pest Control Association.
Everyone knew Marie as a voracious reader, who at one point owned upwards of a thousand books at her home on the lake. She was reading, in fact, up until her last illness. Her literary tastes were varied and sophisticated. She enjoyed mysteries and romance novels, histories and literary fiction. Her favorite book, however, was Gone with the Wind, a copy of which was always within arms' reach. She travelled the world in her reading. Ireland was her favorite destination.
Marie is survived by her three children, Doris Marie House and Patricia Adele Gorland of Atlanta, and Fred Winton Jones of Montgomery, and three step-children, Pamela Kaye Savage, Stephen Ray Pepper, and Tommy Lewis Pepper.
Known as "Mamaree" to the younger generations, she is survived by four grandchildren, Anthony Dane Logan, Timothy Parris Pope, Joy Yvonne Pope, and Sarah Sky Gorland, and four great-grandchildren, Carey Leigh Pope, Grace Ann Pope, Maya Lucia Pope Alandete, and Callia Soliel Pope Alandete, all of whom live in the Atlanta area, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who live in Alabama.
In her last years, Marie was cared for by Sandra Mann and Lisa Taylor, whose love and devotion provided her much peace and comfort.
A graveside service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery on Saturday, June 17th at 11 a.m.
Pall Bearers will be Tommy Lewis Pepper, Stephen Ray Pepper, Anthony Dane Logan, Timothy Parris Pope, Miguel Eduardo Alandete, and Jimmy Thrash, with Ronald Kent Gorland as honorary pall bearer.
Immediately following the service, there will be a reception at Leak Memory, 945 Lincoln Road, Montgomery, Alabama, 36109.
