Marilyn Mae Mitchel
Marilyn Mae Mitchel died
peacefully on October
26, 2017. She was
born Marilyn Mae
Getzelman in
Hampshire, II on
January 29, 1927. She
was the second child
and grew up on a
farm with 6 brothers.
Farm life was never
her choice, so she trained to be a nurse in
Madison WI and practiced nursing for several
years. She met Robert F. Mitchel on a blind
date while in school in Madison and they
married on August 25, 1950 in Hampshire.
They moved to Riverton WY, then to The
Dalles OR, Walnut Creek CA and finally to
Spokane, WA in 1963. Robert worked for the
US Government as the State Soil Scientist for
Washington for many years. His last two
years in the government were spent in
Washington DC where Marilyn was active
with tennis and took up painting and belly
dancing.
Marilyn was very creative and was a
master at quilting, knitting, crocheting,
counted cross, gardening, sewing and
painting. If something needed to be fixed
around the house, Marilyn was a better
choice than Robert! The house was dedicated
to Marilyn's creativity and she created a
home that everyone wanted to live in. She
loved Bridge and parties and often they were
combined. Election night parties were always
at the Mitchel house and neighbors loved arguing
politics there.
After Robert retired they took many trips including
cruises through the Panama Canal,
around Cape Horn and an exciting journey to
Nepal and Hong Kong. Marilyn was always
ready for a good trip and preferred hotels
with great views and room service. Robert
would have preferred camping, but Marilyn
was persuasive. They both loved Hawaii and
Las Vegas.
They raised three children Mike, Dan and
Jane. Marilyn and Robert were wonderful
parents and rarely missed a baseball game,
gymnastics meet or PTA meeting. She also
excelled at being a grandmother and was
able to treat two of her older grandchildren to
trips to Las Vegas when they turned 21.
Almost every year she hosted the family at a
cabin for a week at Lake Pend Oreille. She
visited her children often and her assistance
was always appreciated.
She was predeceased by both parents, four
brothers; Art, Don, Lloyd and Richard,
husband Robert, daughter-in-law Bev and
grandson Jimmy. She is survived by Mike
(Deanna) Mitchel of Puyallup and their two
children Erin and Abby (Ken) Taylor; Dan
(Colleen) Mitchel of Portland and children
Jenny, Katie (Justin) Perz and Hannah, and
Jane (Roger) Stodola of Monterey CA and
children Nicole and Chris. She also leaves
behind 6 great grandchildren. She is also
survived by brothers Leroy and Lyle and their
families as well as many nieces and
nephews and many good friends.
We wish to thank the Touchmark staff,
especially those in the Devonshire and
Hospice who provided her with excellent care
in Spokane. We also wish to thank the Park
Lane staff, especially in the Memory wing
and the fabulous Hospice staff in Monterey.
The Paul Mortuary is handling all
arrangements. Marilyn did not want services,
but a party. Please join us in celebrating the
life of a wonderful woman and one who will
be missed. The party will be on Saturday
November 11 in Monterey. Contact Jane for
details. Please sign Marilyn's guestbook at
