July 18, 1919 - February 13, 2018 Marina Varella, 98, of Albany passed away Tuesday at her daughter’s home. Marina was born in the Dominican Republic, the youngest of 13 children. At the age of 10, she and the family moved to New York City. All those able to work got jobs in different areas of the city; Brooklyn, Bronx, Long Island. Being the youngest, she lived in an apartment with her parents but all the siblings and spouses lived nearby. Marina worked at the New York offices of Universal Studios from 1942-1968 in the Foreign Publicity Department as an English Titles Condenser. She married Anthony (Tony) Varella in August 1951. After retirement, they moved to Los Angeles in 1968 in order to be near to her daughter, step daughter and grandchildren. In the early 1970’s they moved to San Jose to be near to her sisters and nieces. After Tony died in August 2000, Marina moved to Albany, once again to be near family. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Dee and Jim O’Donnell, 7 grandchildren, their spouses, great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews. Her Parents, Felix Alonso and Sofia Angelica Mera can rest easy now. All their children are home. A viewing will be from 1pm to 2:30pm Friday February 16th at Fisher Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be at 4pm Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Albany.
