Martha Mae Young, 80, of Hot Springs, passed away Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016, surrounded by her husband and three daughters. She was born in Hot Springs, Ark., on July 16, 1936.

Martha met the love of her life, Elza, at the young age of 12 and married him a few years later on March 8, 1952. Martha and Elza were partners in life for 64 years with many of those years as successful business owners of Alpine Chalets Lake Resort and Barbecue Restaurant. Martha worked tirelessly to ensure her guests felt at home. She also managed to make sure her girls were a priority as well. She was lovingly known to her grands as “Meemaw” and she called them her “Sweethearts.” She loved to teach the boys how to catch and clean fish and cook their favorites: chocolate cake, biscuits and gravy, and her famous strawberry preserves. Her legendary cooking even won her first place for “Best Sauce” in Hot Springs’ Inaugural Barbecue Cook Off. She leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion for everyone she knew.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mabel Edwards; her brothers, Bobby Edwards and Bill Edwards; her sister, Clara Howard; and three infant children (two boys and one girl).

She is survived by her loving husband, Elza Young; her daughters, Sherry Bracy (Mike), Kay Koonce (Marvin Itzkowitz) and Kim Vail (Marc); 10 grandchildren, John Bracy (Ginni), Stephen Bracy, Nathan Koonce (Kerry), Brent Koonce (Allison), Nyle Koonce, Daniel Clatworthy, Dax Clatworthy, Dylan Vail, Austin Vail and Cameron Vail; great-grandchildren, Paxton Bracy, Sawyer Bracy, Carson Bracy, Sylvie Koonce, Louis Koonce, Avery Agar, Gentry Agar, Ridge Agar and one great-granddaughter on the way, Lucille Mae Koonce; a sister, Margaret Bennett; brothers, Charles Edwards (Judy), Jimmy Edwards (Verna) and Mike Edwards; numerous nieces and nephews; her longtime special friend, Marilyn Bonham; and her beloved Dachshund, Maggie.

Visitation will be held at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2016, at Gross Funeral Home in Hot Springs, Ark., with funeral services following at 1 p.m. Graveside services will be held at Newkirk Cemetery in Jessieville, Ark. Pallbearers are her Grandsons – John, Stephen, Nathan, Brent, Nyle, Daniel and Dax. Honorary pallbearers include her other “Sweethearts,” Austin and Cameron.

Memorials may be made to Marble Missionary Baptist Church at 2331 Beaudry Circle, Jessieville, AR 71949.
