92, passed away peacefully surrounded by her children, at St Joseph’s Hospital on Tuesday August 15th. The matriarch of four generations, she is survived by her children Cecilia Algood, Barbara Edgerton (Bruce), Mike (Colleen), Paul (Chris), John (Vanessa), Tim (Debbie), Teresa Oscher (Steven), Ellen Moore (Terrence), her sister Helen McHale, 22 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Andrew Joseph and daughter Alice Carlton.



Born in Mereauxville, Louisiana she moved to Tampa when she was three years old. She attended Sacred Heart Academy, excelled in academics and was the Valedictorian of her class. She was also a member of the 1941 girls state championship basketball team. She graduated from St Vincent School of Nursing in 1945 and was a Nurse Cadet during WWII. Employed at St Joseph’s Hospital for over 25 years, Martha held various levels of increasing responsibility including Head Nurse, Nursing Supervisor, Associate Director of Nursing and Director of Clinical Care. She was instrumental in the early planning of the Children’s Wing at St Joseph’s Hospital and during her career was well respected and recognized for her objectivity, compassion and work ethic.



Martha was an accomplished pianist, a voracious reader and enjoyed spending time with her very large family, especially during the Christmas holiday.



A viewing will be held Sunday August 20th 1-3 pm at Blount and Curry Funeral Home, 605 S. MacDill Ave. A funeral mass, to celebrate Martha’s life, will be held on Monday August 21st 2pm at Christ The King Catholic Church, 821 S. Dale Mabry Ave. Burial will take place immediately following the service at Myrtle Hill Cemetery.
