Martin "Marty" Mendez, 49, of Indianapolis, IN and formerly of Ft. Madison passed away at 7:09 AM on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, CA.
He was born on September 5, 1967 in Ft. Madison to Eusebio "Abie" and Julia Villegas Mendez. Marty was a 1986 graduate of FMHS. He had been a loan processor for over twenty years and was currently working for Carrington Mortgage. He was a member of Holy Family Parish, Sacred Heart Church. Marty loved to travel, especially to beaches, mountains, and new places. He and Beth enjoyed their vacations together, being near friends, water, great food and drinks. He was especially connected to California, always calling himself a "Left Coast-er". The fact that he passed within sight of a beautiful Southern California beach after attending the Monsters of Rock Cruise, a longtime dream of his, has comforted all of us as we know that Marty was in his happy place in his last days.
Marty was a huge rock fan and his passion for music was known to anyone who ever had the pleasure to meet him. He attended countless concerts over the years and never stopped being excited about going to another show. Marty and his Brickyard Brothers attended every Brickyard 400 since it's start in 1994. He also loved sports and was an avid Indianapolis Colts and Iowa Hawkeye fan. His kind, gentle, passionate spirit remains in our hearts, and anyone who met Marty knew they had a genuine friend for life. His energy and positivity has left a beautiful legacy.
Survivors include his life partner of fifteen years, Beth Meyer of Indianapolis, IN; his parents, Eusebio "Abie" and Julia Mendez of Ft. Madison; three sisters, Stella (Steve) Etka of Ft. Madison, Mary (John) Carson of Ft. Madison and Christina Wilson of Ft. Madison; a brother, Mario (Bobbie) Mendez of Ft. Madison; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews whom he loved as his own children; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his sister and brother-in-law, Sandra and Mike Bentler and three nieces, Sheena, Shelby and Shayne Bentler and a nephew, Michael.
Friends may call after 2 PM on Friday, October 21, 2016 Sacred Heart Church where the family will meet with friends from 4-7 PM. A wake service will be recited at 7 PM at the church. The funeral mass will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Mark P. Spring officiating. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
