Mary A. Schnaufer, 78, of Hot Springs, passed away December 9, 2017. Mary was born in Croatia Yugoslavia in 1939 to the late Anton and Juliana Dressner. She and her family were forced to flee their country near the end of WWII. They travelled through Hungary to Austria, where they settled briefly before immigrating to the United States. Mary and her family arrived by ship to Ellis Island in 1951.

Eventually Mary’s family made a home in Chicago. Mary as a young adult worked as an insurance secretary and as a beautician. In 1972 she, her husband Michael, and their children moved to Hot Springs. Mary worked as a transcriptionist at St. Joseph Hospital for almost 25 years before retiring in 2001. She was well-known for her knowledge of both grammar and spelling, but she was most famous for her baking. Everyone looked forward to her Easter and Christmas cookies. Mary’s baked goods were requested at parties and a favorite of the sisters.

Mary was a lifelong and faithful Catholic. A member of St. John the Baptist Parish, she had been a member of St. Mary’s Rosary Society, Cursillo, as well as, a devoted Catechism teacher.

A visitation will be at Gross Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 13 from 6-8. A Rosary will begin at 2pm at St. John’s Catholic Church followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 2:30pm. Burial will be at Calvary.
