Mary Ann Suchy, ne Buck, passed away on Jan. 8, 2018. A longtime resident of Coronado, Mary Ann was born in 1930 in Newman Grove, Nebraska. She attended the University of Nebraska where she earned a degree in home economics and journalism and was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She remained a lifelong Cornhusker football fan.

After college she taught home economics in Plainview and Ord, Nebraska. She later worked for Meredith Publishing Company in Des Moines, Iowa as a food editor for Successful Farming magazine. She recalled the excitement and pride of seeing her work in print and of frequent trips to Chicago to work with the magazine's food photographer.

At Meredith she met John Taylor Suchy. They were married in Broken Bow, Nebraska in 1957 and moved to the Chicago area when John began work as a science writer at Argonne National Laboratory. Mary Ann and family moved to Gahanna, Ohio in 1970 when John began working at Battelle Memorial Institute. They lived in Gahanna for nearly two decades. Mary Ann's career was as a full time homemaker, raising three daughters and maintaining a busy life with her church, bowling and bridge leagues, as a Blue Bird troop leader, and as a volunteer for numerous organizations such as the PTA, the March of Dimes, the American Heart Association, and Meals on Wheels.

In 1989 she and John retired in Coronado. They volunteered together for the Catholic Worker at St. Vincent DePaul Center in San Diego. John passed away in 1996. She and daughter Susan made Coronado their home, volunteering together for the American Cancer Society, hosting visits from family and friends, and participating in groups and activities at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and with the Bridge and Bay Garden Club. She was a loyal San Diego Padres fan, an avid crossword puzzler, and enjoyed life in Coronado with her daughter, neighbors, and friends.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Wallace Buck and Kathryn Lenore Heckart Buck, her dear sister Patricia Harding, and her much beloved husband John. She is survived by her daughters Kathryn (Craig) Thielke of Dacula, Georgia, Patricia (Gary Hart) Suchy of Port Allen, Louisiana, Susan Suchy of Coronado; and cherished nieces and nephews Mary Owen, Susan Schoonover, Judy Stockton, Wally Harding, Tom Harding, Jim Harding and their families.

Mary Ann's life will be celebrated in a memorial mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 655 C Avenue in Coronado on Friday, Jan. 26 at 10 a.m., followed immediately by a reception in the adjacent parish hall.

A tribute page with space for guest memories will be at the website for El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego, where she will be laid to rest beside her dearest John. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations in her honor be made to the Scleroderma Research Foundation, the Edmundite Missions in Selma, Alabama, or another charitable organization.

Arrangements under the direction of El Camino Memorial - Sorrento Valley, San Diego, CA.
