Mary Etta Carswell Lowman passed away on Saturday, January 2, 2021. She was born in Burke county, the youngest daughter of the late Bertha Hicks Carswell and Frank Carswell. Mary was an active member of Rutherford College First Baptist Church for many years. She enjoyed working in her yard and flower garden. She retired from Alba Waldensian. After retirement she loved volunteering in several Burke County elementary schools, reading with students, as a Foster Grandparent and was delighted when, later, students in the community came up and gave her a hug.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Hal Lowman; siblings, Mamie Thomas, Louise Lowman, Lovene Pritchard, Ed Carswell, John Carswell, and Bill Carswell. Mary leaves behind four daughters and their families; Jean Witherspoon and sons Jon (Sandra) and Derek (Melissa) Witherspoon, Carolyn Benfield and husband Ray, children, Mark (Debbie), Ray Benfield, and Angie Markham; Judy Fisher and husband Steve, and daughters Brandi (Eric) Clark and Stacey (Derek) Coffey; Janice Berry and husband Nolan, and their son Craig (Heidi) Berry. Also surviving are many cherished great and great-great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She greatly appreciated and loved the frequent visits of nieces Gail Anthony and Louise Lowman.

As her health declined she resided at Autumn Care in Drexel where she received excellent care.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at 1:00 PM at Hillcrest cemetery in Valdese, with Rev. ...... officiating. The family would like to require all in attendance to make sure to wear their masks and to keep social distancing in mind.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity.
