Mary Lou Borges-Tavares, age 54, passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at St. Anne's Hospital surrounded by her family. She was the wife of Gabriel M.Tavares to whom she had been happily married for 17 years.

Born in Furnas, St. Michael, Azores, she was the daughter of the late Joao A. and Maria L. (Melo) Borges. Mary was a graduate of New Bedford High School, class of 1980. She received her associate's degree in Business from Bristol Community College, and also continued her education at U-Mass Dartmouth. Mary Lou began her work career at Ralph's Auto Sales at the age of 16. She started in the service department, and through her incredible work ethic, she eventually became Comptroller, overseeing all the day to day operations of the dealership. After nearly 40 years, at the closing of Ralph's Chevrolet, she started MBT Business Services which she operated until her passing.

Mary Lou loved her family. She was the happiest knowing everyone was taken care of. She was a selfless person who put everyone's needs before her own. Mary was an outgoing person who loved life. She enjoyed traveling, tennis, and golf. She appreciated great music, and was an avid reader. But Mary's greatest joy came from spending time with her family. From sporting events, to recitals and concerts, she was always the first one there to cheer on and support.

In addition to her husband, Mary is survived by two sisters, Margaret Medeiros and her husband Carlos, and Grace Tavares and her husband Eugenio; one brother Gil Borges and his wife Hilda; a sister in law Anna Borges, wife of the late John L. Borges, all of Dartmouth; two step-daughters Suzanne Ferreira and her husband Paul, of New Bedford, and Heather Tavares of Dartmouth; two step-grandchildren Jacob and Arianna Ferreira. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, John, Lisa, Sonya, Nancy, Andrea, Amanda, Melissa, Paul, Megan, Nicole and Adam, whom she loved as her own children.

Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, January 31st, 2017 from 4 to 8 P.M. from Waring-Sullivan at Dartmouth Funeral Home, 230 Russells Mills Road, Dartmouth. Her Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at 9:30AM at the funeral home, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30AM at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 230 Bonney Street, New Bedford, MA 02740. Burial in South Dartmouth Cemetery, Dartmouth.

In the spirit of honoring Mary, the family respectfully asks that you perform one random act of kindness for someone. Help keep her loving and selfless spirit alive. Any monetary donations in her memory may be made to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
