DEMMITT, Mary Margaret (nee Pollard), 90, fortified with the sacraments of Holy Mother Church on Saturday, February 25, 2017.

Beloved wife of the late John W. Demmitt; loving mother of Anne (Michael) Hillebrand, Stephen (Peggy) Demmitt, Mary Ellen (Jackson) Davis, Theresa (Stan) Huddleston, Carol (Raymond) Marey, Matthew (Martina) Demmitt, and Kathleen (Ralph) Robert; dear sister of Shirley (Douglas) Reaume and Elizabeth (the late Gene) Jary; dear grandmother of 24; great grandmother of 18.

Born September 4, 1926 in Detroit, Michigan, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Ann (nee Mitchell) Pollard

Mary's faith was an integral part of her life. She attended daily Mass and was involved in many parish activities, most notably as a Heavenly Duster at Incarnate Word Church in Chesterfield. She had a great appreciation of God's creation and the outdoors and loved camping, hiking and bird-watching. Prior to her husband John's death, she and John volunteered on special projects with the National Parks Service. Together they traveled frequently to Colorado, where they had spent the early years of their marriage, exploring their beloved Rocky Mountains. They also served as volunteers at Rockwood Reservation.
Mary was an elementary school teacher, a career she left in order to raise her children. However she was always teaching, both in the way she parented her children and as a volunteer. She taught Parish School of Religion at St. Dismas Church in Florissant and at Incarnate Word Church; she also served as a tutor at Green Trails Elementary School.

Mary enjoyed many interests including quilting and sewing, traveling, bowling and playing bridge. She was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, a love she passed on to many of her family. Mary's greatest love was for her family. Her illness robbed her of many of life's memories but she never forgot her children. She enjoyed their visits and became enlivened by their telephone calls. Mary was equally overjoyed by her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Their visits never failed to make her laugh.
