Lewiston - Mr. Maynard E. Rand, age 78, of Sabattus, passed away Saturday morning July 15th at Central Maine Medical Center with his wife Joan, daughter Cindy and grandson Brady at his side. He was born in New Gloucester April 15, 1939, one of 10 children born to George and Aida (Gould) Rand. He grew up in Poland and was educated in local schools. Mr. Rand spent his working years in the construction industry as a Brick Mason until his retirement. In his recent retirement years, he was a volunteer driver for RTP of Portland for almost 10 years. He attended East Auburn Baptist Church. On August 17, 1991, he married the former Joan Goughnour. He enjoyed listening to country and bluegrass music, family trips, especially to Florida for many years and eating scallops and lobster. He enjoyed watching and going to "wrastling" matches. But two other hobbies he enjoyed, perhaps the most, were model trains and plane spotting with his grandson Brady. His number one joy in life was Brady. He was extremely proud of him and always referred to him as his "Sidekick." Together, he and Brady were avid model train enthusiasts and they would also take a ride to different airports around the region to watch planes take-off and land for hours. Maynard also enjoyed the company of the several exchange students that his daughter Cindy and grandson Brady hosted for many years, David, Dennis, Lukas, Jakub, Cesar, Ugo and Greg, he thought of them as his own grandsons. Maynard had a wonderful sense of humor and always enjoyed making people laugh with his teasing and joke-telling. He was a loving, devoted and hard-working husband, father and grandfather who will be missed. He leaves behind his wife Joan Rand of Sabattus; his daughter Cindy Whetzel of Lewiston; his son Larry Morin and wife Stacy of Lewiston; his daughter Gina Glavine of Richmond; four grandchildren Brady Whetzel, Serina Richardson, Brandy Morin, and Kristina Morin two sisters Georgiana Rice of Portland and Janice Rand of Auburn; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by seven sisters and brothers George Rand, Catherine Mitchell, Marjorie Taylor, Arlene Sweenington, Gerry Wilmot, Eugene Rand and James Rand.In lieu of flowers, a college scholarship fund for Maynard's grandson, Brady Whetzel, has been set up at Bangor Savings Bank, under Brady Whetzel - 882 Lisbon St. Lewiston, Maine 04240
