Melva Mason was born in Boulder, CO, on October 29, 1927 to Samuel and Hazel Abernathy. She was the middle of five sisters. After spending most of her youth at the Marshall School, she transferred to Boulder High, where she graduated.
At the age of 17, she met the love of her life, Ray Mason, and married six months later. They spent the next 68 years of their lives together. Within the next three years after their wedding, the couple had two children, Rick and John. Soon after, Melva went to work for Neodata and worked as a supervisor in purchasing in Boulder for 33 years. As she raised her family and supported Ray's position with the Boulder County Sheriff's Department, she slowly gained the well-deserved reputation as the family matriarch. She was "Grandma" to everyone who knew her well.
She hosted the family Christmas party at her house on Cherryvale Road. For many years, on a typical Sunday before Christmas, over 50 family members arrived to celebrate together. She also loved Easter. She would spend weeks filling plastic eggs with coins and candy for her grandchildren/great grandchildren who arrived on Easter morn to find all of the eggs she had hidden. Melva celebrated every holiday with zest. Decorating was a passion.
Melva was also active for years in the Boulder Valley Little Britches rodeo. She was a timer for the National Little Britches rodeo for 30 years. She was famous in the rodeo circuit. Rodeo was a big part of her life for many years.
She was also the consummate "Grandma" to Tina, Wendy, Kelly, and Michelle. They spent many nights "staying over" with Grandma and Grandpa, and waking to homemade pancakes.
For years, she watched her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in their varied sports. She also knew the score of every Rockies and Broncos games.
Melva Mason was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend. She was the family matriarch, honest, loving, and cherished for her enormous heart.
Melva is survived by her two devoted sons, Rick (Debbie), and their daughters Tina Payne (Steve), and Wendy Parker (Courtney), and John and his daughters Kelly Davis (Steve) and Michelle Russum (Shannon). She is also survived by two sisters, Maybelle Wilson and Margaret Gapter, five great grandchildren (Lauren, Nick, Alex, Steviejo, and Jake), and many nieces, nephews, and cousins throughout Boulder County.
Grandma Melva, as she will always be remembered by all, was deeply loved by everyone who knew her, and will be missed by all.

Funeral Services will be held 10:00 AM, Monday, July 31, at the Ryssby Church at 9000 N. 63rd in Longmont. Internment will follow at Mountain View Memorial Park. To leave condolences please visit
