A kind and gentle soul took flight to the heavens on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 when Melvin E. Pierce 85, passed away at the Keene Center Genesis, Court Street, Keene.

He was born in Newfane, VT on October 2, 1931, the son of Warren H. and Ruth (Edson) Pierce.

A resident of Hancock, NH for most of his life, Melvin attended local schools and was a graduate of Hancock High School.

He was an Army veteran serving during the Korean War.

Melvin worked as a truck driver with Granite State Feed in Greenfield, MA and later with Harris Construction of Peterborough, NH. Melvin then worked at the South Meadow Middle School in Hancock until his retirement.

He was a member of the United Methodist Churches in Peterborough and Keene. As a member of the church in Keene, he helped with building a church in Maine as part of the church's missionary work.

He was also a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows in Keene.

Melvin also enjoyed making models, trains and building puzzles. He was especially fond of cats and dogs.

He will be greatly missed by many, including his two children, Pamela Doubleday and her husband, Jonathan, of Swanzey, NH, Melvin W. Pierce and his wife, Sheila Ames, of Troy, NH; his three grandchildren, Sarah Doubleday and Andrew Doubleday, both of Swanzey, Ethan A. Pierce of Troy; a brother, Ray Pierce; his step-children, Sharon Whipple of Newport, NH, Edward Russell of Florida, Susan Jenkins of Tucson, AZ; and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased a brother, Alvah Pierce; and two step-children, Linda Johnson and David Russell.

A graveside service with military honors will be held in the spring in the Hillside Cemetery, Hancock, at a date and time to be announced.

The family would like to thank the dedicated staff of Keene Center Genesis for their loving care and making Melvin's last days full of warmth and many smiles.
